Objectives of this work package are to identify and compile the ways information on migrant status is collected in European cancer registries, to develop a uniform definition on migrant status and to develop indicators for the estimation of cancer risks of migrants. The work in WP9 will be carried out in cooperation with the population-based cancer registries in Europe. The specific steps are:
- 1. Assessment of the status quo by:
- Establishing contact with all population-based cancer registries in EU countries
- Conducting a survey among the participating registries to identify and compile the ways in which information about migrant status is collected
- Reviewing existing migrant-sensitive registry based studies in Europe.
- 2. Research and/or develop:
- Recommendations for a uniform definition on migrant status
- Methodological issues, in particular the usefulness of DCO, staging and survival data as indicators for access to, and utilisation of, cancer services by migrants
- Ethical issues in reporting cancer risk and mortality by migrant status
- 3. Provision of feedback by:
- Organising a conference with experts from the participating registries on the survey results, the recommendations for a uniform definition, and methodological issues
- Presenting results in a peer-reviewed international journal and during a European conference (e.g. EUPHA)
- 4. Preparation of future community action and contributing to improving migrant health by:
- Developing strategies to compare cancer risk among migrants across different EU countries
- Proposing a set of migrant-sensitive indicators together with guidelines how these can be integrated into the routine reporting of the cancer registries
Deliverables of the work package include a list of migrant-specific cancer databases in Europe, including definitions used, available indicators, etc., and the development of guidelines for a Europe-wide uniform definition & uniform collection of migrant status in EU cancer registration.
