![]() | Abstract |
Availability of comparable and exchangeable data is a prerequisite for the assessment of ethnic groups’ health status among European countries. It also represents the basis to carry out studies for the planning of public health interventions in favour of ethnic groups and immigrants. However, heterogeneity of these populations between and within countries, differences of living conditions in the host countries, and differences of methods of data collection, limit the possibility of comparisons.
The objectives of the WP are the following:
a) to take a census of available health and health care data sources which include socio-demographic information on ethnic groups and immigrants in EU countries;
b) to identify criteria for an operational definition of ethnic groups and immigrants which can be comparable among EU countries;
c) to define strategies of analysis and indicators to assess the health status of ethnic groups and immigrants and to compare it with that of the indigenous populations across EU countries.
The activities to achieve these objectives will be the following:
- A questionnaire will be developed to ask for information on existing health and health care related and socio-demographic data sources which include variables on ethnicity in EU countries.
- Another questionnaire will be developed to ask for information on existing policies in relation to immigration and health as well as on health care services organisation, in order to provide a description of the contextual aspects of each EU country, particularly in relation to health.
- The information collected through the questionnaires will be analyzed and reported. The information will be used to define a standardised ethnic/immigrant status index in EU countries.
- The index will be developed considering the variety of dimensions that may influence the status of a person and identify her/him as belonging to an ethnic group or as being an immigrant.
- Strategies of analysis and indicators on health status of ethnic groups and immigrants will be developed on the basis of the existing available data sources in EU countries.

Development of a questionnaire to be addressed to chief medical officers and to researchers in the field of public health and epidemiology in European countries. This questionnaire will be used to gather information on existing health and health care related data sources which include socio-demographic variables on ethnicity.
Other scientific output is in progress.

As partners in the European collaboration research programme in migrant health (Migrant and Ethnic Health Observatory, MEHO), we developed a questionnaire to gain knowledge of existing health and health care related data sources which include socio-demographic information to identify immigrants and ethnic groups in EU countries. Another questionnaire will be developed to learn on immigration policies, mainly in relation to health care use. We are therefore looking for persons living in EU countries interested in this project and with expertise in this field, who are able to respond these questionnaires or to suggest us official channels (ministries, chief medical officers) to be contacted in order to find and recruit respondents. If you are interested to help us, please contact us at: cacciani@asplazio.it Thank you in advance.
